iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Sell Out Instantly With January Ship Dates

Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, starting at $1,999 on October 16, 2026. Launch-day pickup inventory sold out instantly as delivery estimates slipped into late January 2027 amid high demand and manufacturing constraints.

Pre-orders for Apple’s first foldable device went live at 8 a.m. ET on October 16, 2026, triggering an immediate rush that overwhelmed availability across the Apple Store app and website. Within five minutes, initial delivery windows slipped past the October 23 launch day into November, and by 8:30 a.m. ET, scheduled deliveries had pushed into January 2027, according to updates tracked by early buyers.

Apple opened pre-orders for the device at 5 a.m. PT / 8 a.m. ET. By 8:15 a.m. ET, the Apple Store app showed delivery dates between December 8 and December 15. The pre-order experience did not go smoothly for everyone, with delivery dates ultimately sliding to January 25 of next year, 2027.

Apple announced the hardware during an event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, on September 9, 2026.

Storage Tiers, Pricing, and Carrier Offers

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB configuration, scaling up past $3,000 for the highest storage tier. Available colors include sky white and night sky black.

The smartphone can also be leased through Apple’s Upgrade leasing program. Apple has offered its first smart home hub, while competitors such as Samsung and Huawei have sold foldables since 2019, and Google debuted its first Pixel Fold in 2023. Samsung also introduced its newest foldable, the Galaxy Fold8, last month.

Major U.S. wireless carriers rolled out aggressive trade-in promotions alongside the launch. AT&T offered up to $1,200 off the device with an eligible trade-in valued at $230 or more under its Premium 2.0 plan or higher, delivered through 36 months of bill credits. AT&T also requires a trade-in value of $130 or more for up to $930 off on the Extra 2.0 plan or higher, a trade-in value of $130 or more for up to $500 off on the Value 2.0 plan, and a trade-in value of $35 to $129 for up to $350 off on any eligible unlimited plan. Furthermore, if switching to AT&T, the carrier gives up to $800 to pay off a current device balance, along with $200 in savings per line when ordering online. T-Mobile introduced discounts reaching up to $1,000 for any-condition trade-ins paired with an Experience Beyond plan, with bill credits spread over the course of 36 months. Buyers utilizing the Experience More or Experience Beyond plan can receive up to $830 off via trade-in with T-Mobile, while most other plans qualify for up to $730 off when adding a new line, relying on a shared 36-month installment framework.

Display Specs, Accessories, and Bot Scrapers

According to Apple’s official site, the battery supports up to 44 hours of video playback through the outer display and up to 31 hours when running video on the inner screen.

Apple designed two proprietary cases for the hardware: the iPhone Duo Case at $79 and the iPhone Duo Folio at $129, which includes an integrated kickstand. Third-party manufacturers including OtterBox, Speck, and Spigen also released compatible cases.

The pre-order window drew frustration from consumers as automated purchasing bots deployed by resellers swept up inventory for bulk flipping. One individual bragged about hundreds of dollars in potential profit per unit without getting out of bed, though the user subsequently protected their account so only approved followers could view the posts.

Manufacturing Pressures and Market Strategy

Industry analysts point to complex hinge mechanics and delicate bendable screens as primary bottlenecks limiting initial supply. Yield rates for foldable screens remain significantly lower than traditional smartphone slabs.

Market researchers note that while foldables account for a small fraction of total smartphone shipments, they command a disproportionate share of industry revenue. IDC projects that the category will capture nearly 7% of global smartphone revenue this year while representing just over 2% of units. Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak pointed out that Apple boasts an active base of roughly 1.4 billion iPhones, meaning an influx from merely a fraction of those early adopters could easily overwhelm the near-term availability of approximately 6 million or fewer units anticipated by Counterpoint. Counterpoint expects initial demand to exceed supply.

According to reports from China’s Securities Times, Apple reportedly increased iPhone Duo production by 30%, with an estimated 10 million devices being produced for 2026. Francisco Jeronimo, Vice President of Data and Analytics at IDC, and other analysts have shared perspectives on the device’s market trajectory. Many industry watchers expected the foldable iPhone to start between $2,400 and $2,500, but Sag suggested that Apple coming in at $1,999 indicates the company wants a large share and expects the Duo to become a status symbol during the holiday season and potentially into next year, with status appeal reinforced by scarcity.

For customers unable to secure pre-orders for home delivery, retail options remain limited. Apple noted that local store inventory availability for the October 23 sales launch remains unconfirmed, leaving walk-up queues as the primary alternative for buyers unwilling to wait until 2027.
