On Saturday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the seizure of a ship “linked” to Israel in the Gulf, according to what the official Iranian news agency “IRNA” reported.
Earlier on Saturday, the British maritime security agencies UKMTO and EMBRI reported that the incident occurred 50 nautical miles off the coast of Fujairah, UAE.
Ambrey noted that she had seen “still footage of at least three individuals descending from a helicopter onto what appears to be a cargo ship,” noting that this method had been “previously used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy,” according to Agence France-Presse.
The detained ship “MSC Aris” will be towed to Iranian territorial waters, according to what Reuters reported.
This incident comes amid escalating tension in the region, as the United States sent military reinforcements in anticipation of a possible Iranian attack in response to an air strike “attributed to Israel,” which resulted in the destruction of the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and the killing of seven members of the Revolutionary Guard, including two senior officers.
On Friday, US President Joe Biden said he expected Iran to strike its arch-enemy Israel, which it holds responsible for the attack in Damascus, “sooner rather than later.”
On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Iran felt it had no choice but to respond to the deadly attack on its diplomatic mission after the UN Security Council failed to take action.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei, threatened Israel again that it would “be punished.”
Khamenei pointed out that “consulates and embassies in any country are the territory of that country, and an attack on our consulate means an attack on our territory.”
