TEHRAN> Iran has hanged former Deputy Defense Minister Alireza Akbari on charges of spying for Britain. Alireza, who was in solitary confinement, was sentenced to death last day. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that the execution of Alireza Akbari, who has dual citizenship in Britain and Iran, is a barbaric action by the Iranian government.

Alireza Akbari was arrested in 2019 on charges of being a spy for Britain’s Foreign Intelligence Service and passing on national security information. Alireza Akbari was the Deputy Defense Minister during 1997-2005. He was also a senior member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps. He was a notable mediator of the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Iraq in 1988.

Akbari had previously sent an audio message to the BBC saying he was forced to confess by giving him psychoactive drugs.
