Several sources reported that Iran decided to “reduce its military presence in Syria” after Israeli strikes targeted a number of its military leaders.
Agence France-Presse quoted a source close to the Lebanese Hezbollah as saying: “Iranian forces evacuated the southern Syrian region and withdrew from their positions in the Damascus countryside, Daraa, and Quneitra in the south of the country during the past weeks.”
For his part, Director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told the agency, “Iranian forces evacuated headquarters starting from Damascus and in the south of the country, all the way to the border with the occupied Golan, for fear of being targeted again.”
Abdul Rahman added, “Fighters from Hezbollah and other Iraqis replaced Iranian forces in the aforementioned areas.”
About 3,000 fighters and military advisors from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard are deployed in Syria, with the presence of thousands of pro-Iranian fighters in various regions, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The Israeli bombing that targeted the Iranian consulate in Damascus in early April was a painful blow to Iran, as it resulted in the killing of 7 members of the Revolutionary Guard, including two commanders, one of whom was the most senior Iranian military official in Syria.
In response to targeting the consulate, Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel, in the first direct Iranian attack on it. Attacks attributed to Israel also targeted central Iran last week, but Iran downplayed their importance.
