According to those responsible for the Iranian police, new surveillance cameras will make it possible to identify women who do not respect the veil on the street, in the car or in shopping centers. These new technologies will not make mistakes, the police chief said on Friday. A photo of the unveiled women will be taken on the spot and sent by SMS message with a warning message.

In case of recidivism, these women will go to court and must pay a penalty, will be deprived of certain social services, or will be prevented from leaving the country. The cars of women who do not wear headscarves may also be impounded for several weeks. Similarly, restaurants, cafes or shops whose employees do not respect the veil could be closed.

After the death in September 2022 of Mahsa Amini, arrested by the public order police for not respecting the veil, a growing number of women decide not to wear this garment on the street in protest. Iran’s deputy prosecutor announced that those who encourage women to remove their headscarves could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
