Iranian Foreign Minister Calls for Referendum on Palestinian Issue

During a gathering in the Qatari capital Doha, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdolhian reiterated Iran’s stance on the Palestinian issue. He called for a referendum on the future of Israel and the Palestinian territories, stating that both Iran and Israel do not believe in a two-state solution.

In a video interview with CNN’s Becky Anderson, Amir-Abdolhian emphasized the need for a referendum that would involve all original Palestinians, including Jews, Christians, and Muslims, to decide the future of the region. He proposed a single government solution without specifying further details.

The foreign minister also warned of a potential “big explosion” due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. He cautioned that the violence in Gaza could lead to a wider conflict that would impact the entire Middle East. Amir-Abdolhian pointed out that the conflict has already drawn the involvement of regional actors, such as the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah, who have been closely monitoring developments in Gaza.

Amir-Abdolhian stated that Iran has informed US officials of its opposition to the spread of the conflict in the region. He also claimed that Iran did not have prior knowledge of the Hamas attack on October 7 but considers the group’s actions as “legitimate opposition”.

The Iranian official reiterated the country’s proposal for a referendum to determine the fate of Palestine, with only descendants of those who lived in the region before 1948 being allowed to vote. This proposal stands in contrast to the public support of most countries for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Amir-Abdolhian’s remarks underscore Iran’s continued involvement in the Palestinian issue and its stance against a two-state solution. The call for a referendum and the warning of a potential “big explosion” in the region highlight the escalating tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
