A British-Iranian journalist who decided to interview Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi was asked to wear a headscarf. The interview was canceled when the journalist said it was not possible. This news comes amid heavy protests in the country following the killing of a 22-year-old woman who was taken into custody by the religious affairs police for allegedly not wearing a proper headscarf.

On her Twitter handle, CNN’s Chief International Anchor, Christiane Amanpour, revealed that she had decided to interview President Raisi, who was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly meeting. “This will be President Raisi’s first interview on US soil,” Amanpour said.

The journalist said that he has been preparing for this interview for weeks. Everything was ready for the interview but Raisi was the only one who did not turn up. With only 40 minutes left for the interview, an assistant came and asked the journalist to wear a headscarf as it was the holy month. Rice’s aide also clarified that she could not be interviewed if she did not wear a headscarf. The assistant said that it is also a sign of respect. But she said on Twitter that it was difficult to accept it. Then the interview was avoided.
