Iris and the men **

by Caroline Vignal

French film, 1h38

Everything to be happy. The hackneyed formula applies to Iris: a charming husband, two daughters who are doing well and a job as a dental surgeon. But (since there always comes a but after this introduction) her husband, busy with work, is not very available. When a virtual stranger whispers to her about finding a lover via an application, Iris is at first outraged. Then the idea takes hold.

With Antoinette in the Cévennes, her first film, Caroline Vignal won over 800,000 spectators. This sunny comedy focused on the journey of a schoolteacher who followed in Stevenson’s footsteps with the hope of finding her lover. Iris and men takes some ingredients. First Laure Calamy, César for best actress for her role as Antoinette, always moving and funny. And a speech on the emancipation of its heroine. Through adventures where she imposes her rules, Iris assumes her desire, at the risk of getting lost.

Certainly, the setting of the Cévennes in summer and the lover’s quest via hiking with a donkey appealed more than the meetings in the Paris region via an app – and whose claimed sexual dimension, although filmed without crudeness, may offend certain spectators. But Antoinette’s fantasy still runs through the adventures of Iris and Laure Calamy works wonders, up to a musical comedy scene with assumed kitsch on the notes of It’s raining men.

Around the actress, the supporting roles give another substance to the story. Irresistible with unfailing good will, Suzanne de Baecque plays the shy dental assistant who ends up getting annoyed at rearranging the office’s agenda according to romantic escapades that she disapproves of. In Iris’s gallery of lovers, a moving concentrate of humanity, Laurent Poitrenaux stands out as the flamboyant initiator and Izm, all in gentle virility. Vincent Elbaz imposes in a few scenes a husband also lost somewhere else, but who ultimately dreams, like Iris, of a return home.
