Last week we told you that even though you pay one of the highest prices in the world on Netflix, it could have been even worse. This week we are here to do the opposite: to upset you knowing that there are those who receive no less, and even more, for ridiculous sums.

Since Netflix began operating in Israel, it has raised prices here no less than 4 times: in 2016, with the opening of the service to Israel and most countries in the world, prices were $ 8/10/12 for SD / HD / 4K tracks, respectively; In the summer of 2017, the price was converted to shekels and increased by a few percentage points to 29.90 / 39.90 / 49.90; In the summer of 2019 it rose more than 10%, to 32.90 / 46.90 / 60.90; And at the beginning of the current year, it jumped again, to NIS 32.90 / 54.90 / 69.90 (yes, the basic plan remained at the same price, but the others jumped by almost 20%). In the world, too, prices have risen with similar frequency, and in other countries even more so. But there are also countries where Netflix has actually lowered the price. No, we are not confused. Netflix has lowered prices.

In 2020, Netflix in India and a number of other countries launched a new package, intended for smartphones only – since most Indians do not have TVs anyway, and hardly any normal smartphones – at a price of about $ 3 per month; And this year it announced that its regular programs for computers, televisions and, of course, smartphones will be reduced, with prices now at 500, 650 and 800 rupees (NIS 22 / 28.5 / 35) per month – about 40% less than in Israel.

More in-

As we did in an article that tried to find out if we are really suckers, also in an article that proves that we may not be the most suckers but certainly in a high place we relied on the research conducted by Comparitech last April, which compared Netflix prices and available content in 81 countries around the world. Data from databases that monitor these two factors.

This time, too, we were based on the price of the package that the ice website learned was popular in Israel by a huge margin – the “regular” package, which offers HD quality and viewing on 2 devices simultaneously. As can be seen, the country where the lowest price is paid for this package is actually Turkey, with a price of less than four dollars; Followed by Pakistan with a price of four dollars and a third; In third place Argentina with a price tag of less than $ 6; India with a price tag of just over $ 6.5; Columbia in fifth place with just over $ 7; The countries of Ukraine, Brazil and the Philippines with prices ranging from $ 8 to $ 9; In Egypt you pay exactly $ 9 (again, true to the dollar rate in April); And grossed nearly $ 9.5. It should be noted that in 7 countries – Turkey to Brazil – less than half of the price is paid in Israel.

However, as we noted last week, the overall price is not the only index. The amount of content also varies from country to country, and the Comparitech website found a way to reflect this by dividing the price by the number of content (movies and series) available in each country to calculate the price per unit of content.

Here, the country that receives the relatively lowest price is Pakistan, where the price per content unit is $ 0.00074; Turkey in second place, with a price of $ 0.00084 per item; India and Argentina draw in 3rd and 4th places, with a price of about $ 0.00112 per item each; Philippines in fifth place with a price of $ 0.00138 per item; In sixth place Columbia, where each item costs $ 0.00142; And the last four places in the table are very surprising – they are all European countries, or rather Eastern European countries: in Slovakia the price per item is $ 0.00146; In Ukraine $ 0.00150; In Bulgaria $ 0.00152; And in Lithuania $ 0.00156.

Apart from Ukraine, the other European countries in this table are not in it due to a low total price, but due to a huge amount of content: in Slovakia and Bulgaria over 7,000 content items are available in the service – more than in Israel, and even more than in the US. According to the number of available content, at the top of this list were more countries where the subscription price is cheaper than average than countries where it is above average – 4 countries that are below average compared to 3 countries that are above it.

The price differences per item are also boiling: while in the most expensive country among the cheapest – Peru – you pay $ 0.00187 per item, in the cheapest country among the most expensive – UK – the price starts from $ 0.00214 per item. At the edges of the differences are simply unbelievable: in Switzerland you pay 5.3 times more – not 5.3% more, but double 5.3, or 430% more! – than in Pakistan ($ 0.00394 compared to $ 0.00074). In Israel, by the way, the price is slightly above double the average for the cheapest countries.
