Matteo Salvini has a problem with Russia again. As reported by the media, the Italian right-wing populist allowed the Kremlin to get involved in the current government crisis. According to the daily newspaper “La Stampa”, at the end of June a representative of the Russian embassy asked Salvini’s adviser whether the head of the Lega was prepared to withdraw his three ministers from the government.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigned a few weeks later. The Russian government was also publicly pleased about this: Draghi had pursued an uncompromising transatlantic course in the Ukraine war, implemented EU sanctions and delivered weapons to Kyiv.
