Four decades after the publication of her first work and with millions of copies sold around the world, Isabel Allende is ready to become a children’s author.

The Chilean writer has an agreement with Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers, for three illustrated books. She will begin with “Perla, The Mighty Dog,” which will be released next June. The story is illustrated by the Californian artist of Mexican origin Sandy Rodríguez, and inspired by Allende’s rescued dog. “Perla” is the story of a canine with a big heart, a loud bark, and fierce loyalty to her human soulmate, Nico Rico.

“I love dogs more than people because we have a lot to learn from them. “Perla is cheerful, loyal, she loves unconditionally and she is always willing to protect her family,” Allende said in a statement Wednesday. “The adventures of Perla and Nico are about the power of friendship, teamwork and the magic hidden in our daily lives.”

Allende, 81, is known for novels such as “The House of the Spirits” and “Eva Luna.”
