Mergault first gained recognition in the 1980s with supporting roles in a string of popular French comedies. She embraced her unique speech impediment – a dyslalia that affected her pronunciation of “ch” and “j” sounds – turning it into a signature part of her comedic persona. Films like Les hommes préfèrent les grosses, Pour cent briques, t’as plus rien, and Ça va pas être triste showcased her talent for physical comedy and quick wit. She also appeared in the cult classic P.R.O.F.S alongside Patrick Bruel and Fabrice Luchini.
From Screen to Behind the Camera
In 1991, Mergault made a significant shift in her career, stepping away from acting in front of the camera after a final role in Les Clés du paradis. She then dedicated herself to writing and directing, achieving critical and commercial success with her directorial debut, Je vous trouve très beau in 2006. The film, starring Michel Blanc, was a box office hit, attracting over 3 million viewers and earning her a César Award for Best First Film.

She followed this success with Enfin veuve starring Michèle Laroque, Donnant Donnant with Daniel Auteuil, and Des mains en or, her most recent film released in 2023, featuring Josiane Balasko and Lambert Wilson. Mergault also contributed as a screenwriter to Gérard Jugnot’s successful film, Meilleur espoir féminin.

Nous avons tellement partagé de choses ensemble aussi bien devant les caméras et les micros qu’en dehors , simplement entre amis . Nous nous sommes aimés, fâchés , re-aimés , re-fâchés et rere-aimés… parce que depuis plus de trois décennies, nous avions compris l’un et l’autre que ce qui nous reliait, allait bien au delà des rires, du maquillage et des applaudissements.”
Christophe Beaugrand, another member of “Les Grosses Têtes,” described Mergault as someone with “une simplicité, d’une gentillesse, d’une drôlerie, d’une autodérision absolument incroyable.” Chantal Ladesou, also a colleague on the show, expressed her devastation, calling Mergault “une bonne femme, lumineuse, talentueuse, généreuse, drôle, intelligente.” Philippe Geluck, another member of the show, added, “C’était une grande complice à moi, elle était tellement drôle.”
