Isabelle Reiher Named Director of Institute of Contemporary Art in Villeurbanne
A new era is dawning for the Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC) / Frac Rhône-Alpes as Isabelle Reiher prepares to take the helm, following official confirmation from the French Ministry of Culture on November 24, 2025. Her appointment, the result of a unanimous jury decision in October 2025, signals a renewed focus on the institution’s collection and its role within the regional art landscape.
A Proven Leader in Contemporary Art
Reiher brings a wealth of experience to the position, cultivated over two decades of engagement with the French art world. Born in Montreal in 1969, her academic background is notably diverse, encompassing a master’s degree in international law from the University of Montreal and a master’s degree in art history from the University of Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne, completed in 1999. Further studies at the National Heritage Institute between 2000 and 2002 solidified her expertise in cultural preservation.
Her professional journey began in 2002 as a project manager for visual arts within the culture and heritage department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regional council, where she championed policies supporting artistic creation and contemporary art organizations. This was followed by a role as deputy director at Parc Saint-Léger, a contemporary art center in Pougues-les-Eaux, starting in 2008.
Specializing in Artist Residencies and Regional Collaboration
From 2010 to 2019, Reiher directed the International Center for Research on Glass and Plastic Arts (CIRVA) in Marseille, a nationally recognized art center established in 1983. At CIRVA, she oversaw research and production programs, fostering collaboration between artists, designers, and master glassmakers. She also played a key role in promoting the center’s collection of approximately 700 pieces through exhibitions both in France and internationally.
In October 2019, Reiher transitioned to the Olivier Debré Center for Contemporary Creation (CCC OD) in Tours, succeeding Alain Julien-Laferrière. There, she managed exhibition programming, promoted the work of Olivier Debré, and forged partnerships with institutions across France and abroad.
A Vision for the Future of the IAC
Reiher’s project for the IAC / Frac Rhône-Alpes, titled “Institute of Contemporary Art / Frac Rhône-Alpes: architect of the relationship, witness to the present,” emphasizes the central importance of the collection and its connection to the regional territory and the broader Frac network. She succeeds Nathalie Erginowho led the Institute from 2006 to 2024.
The IAC, located in Villeurbanne, was formed in 1998 through the merger of the Nouveau Musée (founded in 1978) and the Frac Rhône-Alpes. The institution boasts 1,200 square meters of exhibition space and houses a significant public collection of contemporary art, comprising approximately 1,700 to 1,900 works spanning various mediums, including painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and video.
Strengthening Regional Coordination
Since being officially designated as Frac Rhône-Alpes in 2017, the IAC has worked in tandem with its counterpart in Clermont-Ferrand, prioritizing a complementary approach. The recent call for applications for both director positions explicitly called for increased coordination between the two institutions, particularly in defining shared objectives related to collection development, audience engagement, and communication strategies. Elise Girardot is set to begin her role as director of Frac Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand on January 1, 2026. While a specific start date for Reiher’s arrival in Villeurbanne has not yet been announced, the art world eagerly anticipates her leadership.
