Emotional reunions took place in Gaza following the release of 35 Palestinian prisoners by Israel. The release, which occurred on August 17, 2026, comes amid ongoing scrutiny regarding the treatment of those held in Israeli detention. According to rights groups, documented issues within the prison system include instances of sexual violence, deliberate starvation, and torture.

Accounts of Detention and Abuse

Former detainees have reported significant mistreatment during their time in custody. Shadi Abu Sido, a 35-year-old cameraman for a Lebanon-based television station, was arrested in March 2024 while filming at Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza. After being held for 19 months, Abu Sido described being stripped naked, handcuffed, and blindfolded for weeks at a time. He alleged that he was subjected to physical abuse, including being hung on a wall and beaten for disobedience.

Abu Sido further claimed that he suffered a broken rib during his initial arrest and was targeted by interrogators specifically due to his professional background, alleging that an interrogator struck his eye repeatedly to impair his ability to operate a camera. He also stated that his captors falsely informed him that his wife and children had died.

Reports of abuse extend beyond individual testimonies. In February, five Israeli reservists were charged in an indictment regarding the beating and stabbing of a detainee, with accusations that the victim suffered a punctured lung, a torn rectum, and broken ribs. Additionally, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported that bodies returned by Israeli authorities have displayed signs of torture, with some remains missing fingers and toes. The Israel Defense Forces have not responded to requests for comment regarding these specific allegations of abuse.

Detention of Healthcare Workers

The population of those in Israeli custody includes a significant number of medical professionals. According to Healthcare Workers Watch, at least 115 healthcare workers from Gaza remain in Israeli detention. Among those currently held is Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a prominent pediatrician and the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. Despite reports from his family that he had been cleared for release, an Israeli court recently extended his detention by an additional six months.

The Israeli military has maintained that medical facilities in Gaza have been utilized as operating bases for Hamas, a justification they have used to defend strikes on hospitals.

Broader Context of Imprisonment

The recent release of 35 individuals represents only a small fraction of the total number of Palestinians currently held by Israel. Estimates indicate that more than 9,400 Palestinians remain in Israeli prisons.

The status of detainees and hostages has been a central point of contention throughout the conflict, which began following the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. While prisoner swaps have occurred periodically throughout the war—including a major exchange in early 2025 that saw the release of over 1,700 Palestinian detainees in exchange for Israeli hostages—the cycles of detention and release continue to draw international attention. Humanitarian organizations and monitoring groups continue to track the conditions of those still in captivity as tensions persist.
