Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon today killed three people, including a Hezbollah field commander, Reuters reported, citing sources in the Lebanese security services.

Israel’s armed forces said Ismail Baz, killed in a car strike near the southern town of Ain Ebel, was the commander of Hezbollah’s coastal sector and was involved in planning rocket and anti-tank missile attacks on Israel.

Hezbollah released a statement expressing grief over Baz’s death, but did not specify what his role was in the organization.

In other Israeli airstrikes against two vehicles in the southern part of the country, at least two Hezbollah members were killed, sources from the Lebanese security services and the civil defense said, BTA reports.

“Hezbollah” and Israel are shelling each other parallel to the war in Gaza, and this represents the most serious escalation of the war between them in 2006, according to Reuters. The agency estimates that at least 370 Lebanese have died so far, including more than 240 Hezbollah fighters and 68 civilians. This raises concerns about the potential for future escalation of the conflict between the regional foes, Reuters notes. On the Israeli side, 18 people were killed, including soldiers and civilians.
