Wdozens of British Airways (BA) flights at London’s Heathrow Airport have been canceled due to a technical problem. According to aviation analytics provider Cirium, 175 services were canceled on Thursday and Friday, impacting thousands of travellers. BA said after “a number of short-haul flights out of Heathrow” had to be canceled on Thursday due to a “domino effect from a technical problem”, the “vast majority” of flights were back in operation on Friday.

Heathrow Airport wrote on its website on Friday that despite the solution to the problem, there could still be “cancellations and delays” in take-offs and landings of BA flights. In addition, a strike by the security staff at Terminal 5 has been announced for the weekend, which could also lead to “disruption to the travel plans of many passengers” on the Pentecost weekend.

This is not the first time that BA has had to cancel a number of flights at Heathrow due to IT problems. Connections within Great Britain and Europe were particularly affected. Accordingly, more than 20 flights to Heathrow could not take place.

At times, the airline’s IT systems were completely paralyzed, as one employee said. Some stranded passengers complained about insufficient information and support from BA employees on site.
