Since January 15, the wastewater of Orléanais has been used for urban heating… The wastewater treatment plant in the La Source district has just been modernized to supply a new 5 km heating network which serves 310 housing units, a faculty building of sciences, the premises of the university presidency and those of the wastewater treatment plant.

Less CO2 emissions

This system works using a heat exchanger. A heat pump extracts calories from wastewater, whose temperature fluctuates between 12 and 18 degrees after treatment, and injects them into the heat network, to help it rise in temperature, in addition to the wood and gas boiler room which also fuels it. “It reduces the share of gas, it’s virtuous. And this made it possible to eliminate boilers for newly connected buildings,” explains Johann Leclère, operational center manager at Dalkia.

The project mobilized 5.2 million euros including 1.9 million in state subsidies. “Heat constitutes a very important issue since it represents half of energy consumption, two thirds of which comes from fossil sources, not to mention the effects that this can have on health due to the emission of fine particles” , insists the regional director of ADEME, Mohamed Amjahdi.

With this work, which lasted nine months, Orléans will be able to avoid the release of a thousand tonnes of CO2 per year. And the heat network supplied by the wastewater treatment plant should be gradually extended, to heat other buildings in the town of Olivet.
