The Prince of Wales fly to the Caribbean to witness the transition to the republic of Barbados. Sandra Mason will replace Queen Elizabeth II as head of state
It was Charles’ turn to witness the transition of Barbados from the monarchy to the republic. An epochal change for the country that is part of the Commonwealth, and the result of years of complex balances maintained within the Commonwealth – heir to the British Empire of the Victorian era – thanks to the personal charisma of Queen Elizabeth. The Prince of Wales will go to Barbados later this month to attend the investiture of the first president of the small Caribbean state, independent since 1966.
The first historic presidential elections were held in October after the desire to disengage from the British Crown was announced 13 months ago. As did Guyana in 1970, Trinidad and Tobago in 1976 and Dominica in 1978. The new head of state who will replace Elizabeth II will be Sandra Mason, 72 who will be sworn in on November 30th. As a matter of fact, Mason was already sitting in the chair of Governor up to now, therefore of the highest authority after that of the Queen.
Carlo, who met Mia Amor Mottley at Cop26 in Glasgow a few days ago , premier of Barbados? He has already been designated as the new head of the Commonwealth, and therefore in this capacity he was invited to the inauguration ceremony. Not to mention that already for the return of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China in 1997 it was he who represented his mother during the handover ceremony.
