The Rome Court of Cassation posthumously cleared Argentine footballer Diego Maradona of tax evasion charges. The lawyer of the late football player, Angelo Pisani, told the agency. Reuters.

“It’s all over, and I can clearly state, without fear of being contradicted, that Maradona never evaded paying taxes,” the lawyer said. He said the decision marked the end of 30 years of persecution to which the footballer had been subjected, and noted that Mr Maradona’s heirs could seek compensation for damages.

The investigation into Diego Maradona began in the 1990s. The footballer was accused of allegedly using trusted companies in Liechtenstein to evade taxes when receiving payments from the Napoli club from 1985 to 1990. He was charged, ordered to pay €37 million and had some personal belongings confiscated.

For some time, the Argentine football player could not return to Italy, where he was threatened with arrest. In 2013, it was decided to stop prosecuting the football player, but the tax authorities refused to write off the debt. In 2021, the court also decided that there was no evidence of tax evasion.

Diego Maradona died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 61. The cause was acute heart failure, which led to pulmonary edema.
