Roman Caterina Banti and Trentino Ruggero Tita claim Olympic gold in sailing’s Nacra 17 category (multihull). This anticipated success was secured thanks to their significant lead going into the final race, the medal race.
In the Marseille waters, where the Olympic sailing program is taking place, they needed only a seventh place in the “medal race” to secure their Tokyo Olympic success. However, Banti and Tita outperformed expectations, finishing second behind the French crew (Mourniac and Berthomieu) in a race characterized by light winds. Their dominance was never in doubt.
Their main rivals, Argentinians Majdalani and Bosco and New Zealanders Wilkinson and Dawson, finished seventh and eighth in the final race, securing silver> and bronze respectively in the standings.
Banti and Tita’s victory is Italy’s tenth gold medal in these Games. The Roman and Trentino are also the first (and so far the only) Italian Olympic champions from Tokyo 2020 to confirm their title in Paris 2024.
