Severe Weather Disrupts Italy: Flooding,Wind Damage,and Alpine Snow
Italy is grappling with a widespread weather system bringing torrential rain,damaging winds,and heavy snowfall to multiple regions. From severe flooding in teh south to blizzard conditions in the Alps, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution as the situation evolves.
Adriatic Coast Under Pressure
As of 12:45 PM local time, rainfall is intensifying over the middle Adriatic Sea. While conditions have improved in the lower Adriatic, especially in central-southern Puglia, Abruzzo and Marche are now experiencing widespread, though currently weak, precipitation. Further south, heavy rains continue to batter the Gargano peninsula, with accumulations exceeding 40mm.
Earlier today, at 9:25 AM, reports emerged of significant damage in Salento, in the Lecce area, due to strong winds. Numerous trees fell, blocking roads and creating hazardous conditions.Infrastructure was also impacted, with downed telephone poles and electrical cables requiring urgent attention from operational teams.
Southern Italy Battling Flooding and Storms
A vortex centered on the “heel” of Italy is driving intense rainfall and strong winds across the region. A tornado touched down in an agricultural area near Tarantino yesterday, causing some localized damage.
Alpine Snowfall and Northern Forecast
Meanwhile, a separate weather system west of Corsica is bringing significant snowfall to the western Alps. Accumulations of up to 60mm have been reported in the Savona hinterland, with over 40cm of snow falling above 1800m, and even reaching lower altitudes, including 40cm on Monte Settepani (1375m).
Looking ahead, weak rains are expected in northwestern Italy, extending to Lombardy, western Emilia, and Trentino. Snow will continue in the Alps from 1000/1200m, with clearer skies anticipated in the Triveneto region.
Central Italy will see some rain in Tuscany, particularly in the north, with snow in the Apennines above 1400m. Lazio will experience variable conditions with showers, while Abruzzo and Marche will see rain extending from the afternoon.
Southern Italy will continue to experience strong weather in Puglia, with potential cloudbursts, particularly in the Matera area. rain is also expected in Calabria and northern Sicily, but conditions should improve on the Adriatic side throughout the day. Sardinia will see thickening clouds and rain on its western side. Temperatures are expected to remain stable.
Forecast for Thursday and Friday
Thursday will bring residual instability to northern Piedmont, Lombardy, and the upper Triveneto, with clearing skies expected later in the day. Central Italy will see scattered clouds on the Tyrrhenian side and increasing rainfall on the Adriatic side. Southern Italy will be variable, with some rain in western Sicily and the Tyrrhenian peninsula, easing throughout the day and shifting to northern Puglia. Sardinia will experience variable conditions with rain on the western side.
Friday will see fading showers in the north between upper Piedmont, lombardy, and the upper Triveneto, with expanding clear skies. Central Italy will have scattered clouds on the Tyrrhenian side and intensifying rains on the Adriatic side. Southern Italy will be variable, with some rain in the morning on western Sicily and the Tyrrhenian peninsula, easing and moving to northern Puglia. Sardinia will be variable with rain on the western side and dry conditions on the Tyrrhenian side. Temperatures in the south are expected to decrease slightly.
