The Italian four-man bobsleigh team, led by Patrick Baumgartner and crew members Eric Fantazzini, Robert Mircea, and Lorenzo Bilotti, claimed a bronze medal at the World Cup event in Igls. The team finished with a final time of 1’44″15, just 47 hundredths of a second behind winner francesco Friedrich of Germany, who clocked in at 1’43″68. Johannes Lochner secured the silver medal in a close race.
This result marks a critically important return to form for the Italian team, achieving their first podium finish in a “four” event in two years, following a second-place finish on November 19, 2023, in Yanqing, China. “This result means that the work we are doing is bearing the right fruits,” Baumgartner stated. “It brings a strong motivation to continue.”
baumgartner also noted the importance of equipment and technique, adding, “Today we chose the right material and the skates were also vrey good, and despite a few mistakes on the track we were very fast.” He acknowledged areas for advancement, stating, “My overall riding was good, but I know that I can do even better. At the halfway point of the track I struggled more, but overall I am happy.”
The team is focused on building consistency ahead of the Olympics. “It’s very nice…the fact that we got among the Germans,it’s also pleasing to the other crews because finally someone manages to beat them,” Baumgartner added. “Now we can compete with them even in pushing, we’re there at hundredths and everything is very interesting. Now we need to continue on this path with the whole team and find more continuity in the downhill…In the Two we are close in terms of track, we struggle a little more in push. But on the technical tracks we can have our say.”
Sighel Triumphs in Short Track World Tour
Italian short track speed skater Pietro Sighel continued his notable season, winning the 1,000-meter specialty ranking of the World Tour. Sighel secured his victory with a third-place finish in the distance at the event in Dordrecht, Netherlands. This marked his fifth podium of the season and fifteenth of his career, placing him second in the overall circuit standings behind canada’s Dandjinou.
