Italy’s executive is once again taking concentrated action against organized crime, and the first major raid was also the most successful: in the province of Cosenza in the southern Italian region of Calabria, the Carabinieri took 202 suspected members and helpers of the ‘Ndrangheta, the Calabrian, on September 1st branch of the mafia, or placed them under house arrest. As is usual with anti-mafia campaigns, local politicians and entrepreneurs were also among those arrested. Those arrested are accused of membership in a mafia-type association, drug trafficking, extortion, betting fraud and money laundering.
