March 21th, the new of a young man who ejaculated on a lady in the middle of a public market hit the headlines on social networks. Against all expectations, this infamy was derided by many. For our blogger, there is no reason to be amused by this despicable behavior, because the harassers are mentally ill and therefore, they represent a danger to society.
” Shame on you ! », ” Shame on you ! » I don’t know how many times I’ll have to write these words, so that at the end of this post, it evokes disgust at this behavior. If I react like this, it is because I refuse to allow the vile behavior of harassers to cast shame on the entire male gender. Often, these subjects and those who have fun with it, do not realize the seriousness and impact of this abominable behavior on the victims and the entire society.
What happened at the Cotebu market came as the straw that broke the camel’s back. Not from todaythe degree of street harassment with sexual touching has reached its peak. The story of a young Internet user who shared during this month of March, how she had the misfortune of sitting next to a man with wandering hands, on a public transport bus, is quite illustrative of what our sisters undergo on a daily basis .
No excuses
What shocks me and pushes me to write this post is that many Burundians agree with these villains, by blaming the supposedly inappropriate clothing of the victims. But, since when does wearing a skirt or short dress give you the right to do anything? This pretext is despicable. Since when does our society educate its men by telling them that sexually touching or ejaculating on a woman (girl) in the street is okay?
According to a doctor, street sexual harassment is often linked to bipolar disorder, due to disinhibition, and hypersexuality during manic or mixed episodes. It can also be paraphilia, where sexual fantasies are about non-consenting adults and involve suffering or humiliation of oneself or one’s partner. Or, compulsive sexual behavior disorder, recognized as a mental illness by the WHO, and which is characterized by a persistent failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses, or strong urges resulting in inappropriate sexual behavior. In other words, bullies need to get treatment! They are mentally ill people who ignore themselves.
Furthermore, street harassment is punishable by law. Indeed, in law n°1/27 of December 29, 2017 relating to Penal Code of Burundiarticle 572 explains what an act of indecent assault is, and article 586 what sexual harassment is, and the corollary penalties that the guilty party endures.
