Artists Demand Freedom of Creation at Shahid Minar Rally
August 10, 2024 – A group of artists gathered at Shahid Minar in Dhaka on Saturday to voice their support for freedom of creation. The event was organized by several organizations that emerged from the anti-discrimination student movement.
The artists expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence and devastation in the country, stating that they are committed to rebuilding Bangladesh as a non-communal and inclusive nation. They called for the establishment of a non-violent Bangladesh where all can coexist peacefully.
Speakers at the rally emphasized the importance of freedom of creation, arguing that it is essential for a healthy and vibrant society. They condemned attempts to stifle artistic expression and called for the government to uphold the rights of artists.
Among those who spoke at the rally were photographer Shahidul Alam, who warned against complacency, saying, “We must resist any attempt to take away our freedom.” Producer Amitabh Reza echoed this sentiment, urging the public to work together to create a non-discriminatory society. Actress Ajmeri Haque Bandhan emphasized that the sacrifices made during the student movement must not be in vain.
The rally was attended by prominent figures from the music and theater industries, including producer Akram Khan, actress Zakia Bari Mom, and many others.
