For nearly ten years, millions of virtual bird watchers tuned into 24-hour webcams to watch Jackie weather snowstorms, defend her territory, and raise eaglets alongside her longtime mate, Shadow. That extraordinary run ended in the early hours of this morning, August 10, while she was under around-the-clock care at the Ojai Raptor Center.
The raptor’s death marks the closing chapter for an animal that transformed from a wild bird into an international conservation symbol. Her life bridged decades of recovery for a species once pushed to the brink of extinction by habitat loss, hunting, and the pesticide DDT.
From Nest Cam Pioneer to Global Internet Star
Long before her digital fame, Jackie made history in her native habitat. According to environmental nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), she was believed to be the first documented bald eagle hatched in Big Bear Valley. Born in 2012 to parents Ricky and Lucy, her emergence coincided with a broader comeback for bald eagles across the United States.
Her life became a public spectacle after a webcam was installed high in a Jeffrey pine tree overlooking Big Bear Lake.
Jackie’s celebrity status accelerated after she formed a pair bond with Shadow in 2018.
The July Fight and Rapid Medical Decline
The crisis leading to Jackie’s death began on July 17, when she vanished from the nest area. Witness cell phone video later confirmed she had engaged in an altercation with two subadult eagles near Dana Point Park. Although she successfully defended herself using her talons, she was left grounded and unable to fly away.
Rescued and transported to the Ojai Raptor Center in Ventura County, veterinary teams quickly diagnosed severe anemia and inflammation affecting her kidneys. What baffled her medical team was the underlying cause.
As her condition fluctuated, supporters rallied behind her care.
Failing Blood Counts and Intensive Interventions
Despite round-the-clock supportive treatment, oxygen therapy, and consultations involving veterinarians alongside wildlife officials, Jackie’s blood counts continued to slide. Her packed cell volume (PCV), which measures the proportion of red blood cells in circulation, plunged to 13% in early August before dropping even lower.
The Ojai Raptor Center reported a final weekend, noting that Jackie’s PCV dropped below 6% on August 8 before climbing slightly to 9% on August 9. Her care team described her condition as extremely serious and unstable.
“Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists. She remained critically ill, receiving oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, and around-the-clock monitoring in our intensive care unit.”

By the morning of August 10, however, treatments could no longer sustain her.
Legacy at Big Bear Lake
News of her passing prompted an outpouring of grief across social media from followers on several continents.
The Ojai Raptor Center confirmed that Jackie’s remains have been transferred into the care of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Meanwhile, wildlife officials and sanctuary directors have emphasized that her mate, Shadow, remains in the Big Bear territory tending to their surviving fledglings, Sandy and Luna.
