A legendary performer continues to captivate audiences worldwide, as Hong kong superstar Jacky Cheung marked his 300th show on his 10th concert tour at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on November 22, 2023. The milestone occurred during the second night of a six-show encore run, following a record-breaking 11 sold-out performances in Singapore earlier this year.
A Resounding Return to the Lion City
Cheung’s return to Singapore is part of a highly successful tour that began in Macau in June 2023 and has continued to draw massive crowds across Asia. Organizers, Horizon Production, anticipate welcoming another 50,000 fans during the current Singapore leg, running from November 21 to 23 and 28 to 30. This stop is the penultimate location before the tour culminates in a grand 20-show finale in Hong Kong from December 23 to January 24.
The singer previously drew some 88,000 fans to the Singapore Indoor Stadium in July and August 2023, demonstrating his enduring popularity.
A Show of Resilience and Passion
Despite battling a recent bout of the flu, Cheung delivered a dynamic performance, showcasing his vocal prowess and energetic stage presence. He opened with upbeat tracks like “Ooh La La” (1991) and “Road Hero” (1991), seamlessly transitioning into emotional ballads such as “Waiting Till My Heart Aches” (1993) and “Three Days Two Nights” (1997).
“It was 10-plus deg C in Hong Kong and over 30 deg C in Singapore. Unluckily,I caught the flu and sound a little sexy now,” Cheung quipped to the audience, acknowledging his slightly altered voice. He even admitted to experiencing a dizzy spell during rehearsals, questioning his ability to perform, but ultimately reaffirming his deep love for the stage. “But the moment the music started and I began to sing, the answer was immediately clear: Yes, I really, really do.”
Defying Expectations and Celebrating Musicianship
At 64 years old, Cheung continues to challenge perceptions of age and physical limitations. He famously executed his signature split during the performance, a feat he frist accomplished in Macau. “I once had to rise slowly after doing a split. Now,after 300 performances,I can spring back up instantly,” he proudly declared, encouraging the audience to redefine their own expectations. “At 60, can you still do a split? Absolutely! Don’t let old definitions limit your idea of what 60 looks like.”
Cheung also took the opportunity to spotlight the talent surrounding him, introducing each of the 53 members of his orchestra, including Singaporean music director and pianist Goh Kheng Long. He highlighted the age range within the ensemble, from 23 to 65, emphasizing their collective professionalism. Reflecting on his own future,he playfully asked the crowd,”Will you come watch me when I turn 70?”
The concert also featured a visually stunning spectacle, including a four-story structure showcasing the band and a 20-dancer ballet ensemble. Fans near the stage were delighted with glittery streamers bearing the words “The 300th,” with cheung playfully suggesting they might become valuable collectibles.
Despite reaching this importent milestone, Cheung emphasized the uniqueness of each performance. “many people congratulated me on reaching 300 shows, but I don’t see
