Jalen Brunson Channels Holiday Spirit, Delivers Joy to New York Families Through Garden of Dreams Week

New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson is embracing the spirit of the season, extending his impact beyond the basketball court by bringing joy to families in need through the annual Garden of Dreams Week. The NBA star, fresh off leading his team to an NBA Cup championship on Tuesday, has been surprising children and families with gifts and experiences, embodying a generosity that extends far beyond the game.

From “Santa” to Spreading Holiday Cheer

When asked if he embodies the spirit of Santa Claus, jalen Brunson jokingly responded, “I am Santa…I haven’t gained Santa’s weight yet though. Not yet. Soon though.”

Isaiah Lewis’s Unexpected Christmas

One especially poignant story involves Isaiah Lewis, a 16-year-old from New York grappling with the recent loss of his mother. Lewis, now residing with his grandfather, was led to believe he was attending a party, only to find himself at the Knicks training facility in Westchester. There, a locker stall bearing his family’s name awaited, filled with thoughtfully chosen presents.

“I was like, ‘No way!’ I thought it was like a joke or something,” Lewis recounted. “I thought it was like early Christmas or something.”

Brunson personally greeted the family and handed out the gifts, which included a laptop, keyboard, and gaming center tailored to Lewis’s passion for technology and cyber security. According to his grandfather, Alfred Philbert, the gesture was profoundly impactful. “He was so happy, he even said to me, ‘It’s the happiest day of my life,'” Philbert shared. “It means a lot to me because knowing that he lost his mom…It was a pleasure seeing him happy.”

Extending the Gift of Joy to Multiple Families

Brunson’s generosity didn’t stop with Lewis’s family. The Knicks star signed jerseys and posed for photos with six families participating in the Garden of Dreams Adopt-A-Family program, in partnership with SCO Family of Services and Brunson’s own non-profit, the Second Round Foundation.

Salim Tamang, a 14-year-old Knicks fan whose family recently immigrated to Queens from Nepal, received AirPods and Nike sweatpants. “I couldn’t say nothing to him because I was really shocked at that point,” Tamang explained. “I had no words.” His older sister, Salina, received makeup, and his 5-month-old sister, Amaira, was gifted baby clothes. Tamang’s experience quickly became the envy of his friends, as he shared the encounter on social media.”I posted on my story and then they were just like, ‘Yo, you met Jalen Brunson?! How?'” he said.

A Week of Dreams Fulfilled

The 12th annual Garden of Dreams week featured a wide range of experiences for children in need. Two Make-A-Wish children were named honorary coach and honorary Knick for the night, while former New York Rangers goaltender henrik Lundqvist spent time with a 2-year-old battling a rare congenital heart defect and auto-immune disease. The radio City Rockettes also provided a private dance lesson to a 12-year-old girl undergoing cancer treatment.

Brunson, however, wasn’t finished delivering presents. When Lewis’s grandfather playfully inquired about complimentary game tickets, Brunson immediately responded, “You want free tickets to the game? We’ll make that happen.”

Brunson’s actions demonstrate a commitment to his community that extends far beyond the basketball court, solidifying his role as a true leader both on and off the court. He continues to embody the spirit of giving, proving that sometimes, the greatest gifts aren’t found under a tree, but in the kindness of others.
