A dispute at SMK Negeri 3 in east Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi, has escalated dramatically, with a student’s family filing an official abuse report with teh Jambi Regional Police following a physical altercation with a teacher and, afterward, a physical confrontation between the student’s parents and the teacher. The incident, involving a 16-year-old student identified only by the initials MLF, has sparked a legal battle and raised questions about conflict resolution within the Indonesian education system.
Initial Report and Legal Action
On Monday, January 19, 2025, MLF, accompanied by his father and legal counsel, formally reported the incident at the Jambi Regional Police Integrated Police Service Center (SPKT). The report centers on allegations of physical abuse perpetrated by teacher Agus Saputra. according to the family’s attorney,Dian Burlian, the decision to pursue legal action stemmed from the teacher’s perceived unwillingness to engage in restorative justice.
“All this time we have hoped that this case will be resolved using restorative justice,” Burlian stated. “But this individual teacher didn’t want to, or even make a report. we waited three days, there was no concrete resolution so we took legal steps.”
This is not the first attempt to address the situation through official channels. Prior to the report to the Jambi Regional Police, MLF’s older brother had also brought the matter to the attention of the Berbak Police in East Tanjung Jabung, though that initial contact did not result in a formal police report.
The Sequence of Events
Burlian outlined a three-part sequence of events leading to the escalation. The initial trigger involved MLF raising his voice, wich the teacher acknowledged was inappropriate. However, MLF maintains that the outburst was not directed at the teacher.
“At that time, he didn’t shout at the teacher, but shouted at his friends giving the instruction ‘Hey, be quiet, don’t make a noise’,” Burlian explained. “The teacher was also there in the room. So this teacher came in and asked who said wow. Yes, because he (the student) didn’t feel guilty, he came forward, when he came forward, yes, he was hit like that.”
The incident than reportedly escalated beyond the initial physical contact, culminating in a physical altercation between the student’s parents and the teacher. This subsequent confrontation prompted the family to file the formal abuse report with the Jambi Regional Police.
The situation remains fluid as authorities investigate the claims and counterclaims. The case highlights the challenges of maintaining discipline and resolving conflicts within Indonesian schools, and the potential for escalation when communication breaks down.
Why did this happen? The incident began after MLF told his friends to be quiet, prompting a teacher, Agus Saputra, to question who made the remark. When MLF admitted to it, he was allegedly physically assaulted. The family sought restorative justice, but when the teacher refused, they filed a police report.
