Who is Faruq Mahfuz Anam James?
Faruq Mahfuz Anam James, widely known by his stage name ‘James,’ is a highly influential Bangladeshi singer, guitarist, and composer. He is the frontman of the iconic rock band Nagar Baul, formerly known as ‘Feelings.’ Born in 1964 in Chittagong, Bangladesh, James’s musical journey began with a strong familial foundation; his father served as the chairman of the Chittagong Education Board.
James rose to prominence in the 1990s as the driving force behind Nagar Baul, considered one of the “big three of Bangla rock” – alongside LRB and Ark – instrumental in developing and popularizing hard rock music in Bangladesh. The band is also recognized as a pioneer of psychedelic rock within the nation’s music scene.

James’s musical career spans decades,beginning with the release of his band’s debut album,Station Road,in 1987. He followed this success with his first solo album,Annonna,in 1988. Often affectionately nicknamed ‘Guru’ by his fans,James has achieved important crossover success,contributing to several popular Bollywood soundtracks.
He lent his vocals to the hit song “Bheegi Bheegi” from the 2005 film Gangster, and also performed “Chal Chalein” in the 2006 film Woh Lamhe. Further cementing his presence in the Indian film industry, James provided playback vocals for the songs “Rishtey” and “Alvida (Reprise)” in the 2007 movie Life in a Metro, and sang “bebasi” for the 2013 film Warning 3D.
Beyond music, James has also ventured into the world of advertising, appearing in a television commercial for Pepsi in the early 2000s, broadcast across Bangladesh and west Bengal. In 2011, he featured in another Bangladeshi television commercial, this time for the energy drink ‘Black Horse.’
