James Van Der Beek Dies at 48 Following Colorectal Cancer Battle
The beloved actor, best known for his iconic role as Dawson Leery in the 1990s television drama Dawson’s Creek, James Van Der Beek has died at the age of 48 after a courageous fight with Stage 3 colorectal cancer.
His family announced his passing on Wednesday in a heartfelt Instagram post, stating, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” The statement continued, acknowledging the outpouring of grief and requesting privacy, adding, “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Van Der Beek publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis earlier this year. He made a surprise appearance at a Dawson’s Creek reunion charity event in New York City in September, after previously withdrawing due to illness, demonstrating his commitment to his fans and colleagues.
Beyond Dawson’s Creek, which captivated audiences from 1998 to 2003, Van Der Beek showcased his versatility in films like Varsity Blues and on television in CSI: Cyber, where he portrayed FBI special agent Elijah Mundo. However, he remained most recognized for his portrayal of Dawson Leery, a role that defined a generation. As he reflected in 2013, “It’s tough to compete with something that was the cultural phenomenon that Dawson’s Creek was. It ran for so long. That’s a lot of hours playing one character in front of people. So it’s natural that they associate you with that.”
During his time starring in Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek also ventured into comedy, hosting Saturday Night Live with musical guest Everlast. His career continued to evolve with recent appearances in the comedy series Overcompensating and a planned role in Elle, a Legally Blonde prequel series set to premiere in July.
Born and raised in Cheshire, Connecticut, Van Der Beek’s journey to acting began unexpectedly at age 13. A concussion sustained while playing football sidelined him for a year, leading him to audition for, and land, the role of Danny Zuko in his school’s production of Grease. This experience ignited a passion for the performing arts, earning him a scholarship to Drew University in New Jersey. He ultimately left Drew to pursue his role on Dawson’s Creek, later returning in 2024 to receive an honorary degree recognizing his “selfless service and exemplary commitment to the mission of Drew.”
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah.
