A candid revelation from actress Jamie Lee Curtis details how a critical comment on set led to a cosmetic procedure she now deeply regrets. The actress shared her experience in a May interview on 60 Minutes, highlighting the pressures faced by women in the entertainment industry and her subsequent advocacy for self-acceptance.
The incident occurred during the filming of the 1985 movie Perfect, alongside John Travolta. According to Curtis, a cinematographer made a disparaging remark about her appearance. “He was like, ‘Yeah I’m not shooting her today. Her eyes are baggy,” she recalled. “I was 25. For him to say that was very embarrassing.”
The Immediate Aftermath & Lasting Regret
Driven by the hurtful comment, Curtis underwent plastic surgery immediately after the film wrapped. “So as soon as the movie finished, I ended up having some plastic surgery,” she explained. However, the decision proved to be one she quickly came to lament.
“That’s just not what you want to do when you’re 25 or 26,” Curtis continued, adding, “I regretted it immediately and have sort of regretted it since.” The experience fundamentally shifted her perspective on cosmetic enhancements and the unrealistic beauty standards imposed on women.
From Personal Regret to Public Advocacy
The actress has since become a vocal advocate for embracing natural beauty. “I’ve become a really public advocate,” Curtis stated, “to say to women, ‘You’re gorgeous and you’re perfect the way you are,’ so,…oh yeah. It was not a good thing for me to do.”
This transformation underscores the lasting impact of societal pressures and the importance of self-acceptance. Curtis’s story serves as a powerful reminder that external validation should not dictate self-worth, and that true beauty lies in embracing individuality.
