In 2022, Japanese engineers will begin preparations to launch the world’s first wooden space satellite. This is reported by the Japanese news agency Kyodo.

In February 2022, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Takao Doi is to attach wood samples to the outside of the International Space Station (ISS) research module. This is necessary to identify the properties and strength of wood in open space.

Magnolia, mountain sakura yamazakura, stone birch will participate in the experiment. Panels of these types of wood will spend nine months in outer space, and based on the results, Japanese researchers will decide what kind of wood should be used to create a new satellite.

According to the plans of the researchers, the satellite will be a cube with a side of 10 centimeters. Solar cells will be fixed on the cube, and special electronic equipment will be placed inside. The satellite is planned to be launched in 2023.
