Japan Launches Centenary Football League to Bridge Seasonal Shift

The Japanese J.League is introducing a unique competition – the Japan Centenary Football League 2026 – designed to navigate a significant change in its scheduling structure. This transitional league, set to run from February 7 to June 7, 2026, will bridge the gap between the traditional February-December season and a new August-May format beginning in the 2026-2027 season.

In December 2023, the Japanese league board approved a sweeping alteration to the football calendar. The 2025 season will remain the last to follow the conventional February-December schedule, after which the league will adopt an August-May cycle with a break from mid-December to mid-February. This shift, as reported by L’Equipe, aims to enhance the league’s appeal and align it with other major European football calendars.

To facilitate this transition, the Centenary League was created. According to a release from the J.League, the competition will feature 20 clubs – the top 17 teams from the 2025 J League, the top two teams from the 2025 J2 League, and the winner of the accession play-offs. The winners of this championship will qualify for the AFC Elite Champions League 2026-2027. Notably, there will be no promotion or relegation associated with the Centenary League, as all participating clubs are guaranteed a place in the 2026-2027 championship.

On December 15, 2025, the J.League announced the competition format: a championship divided into East and West conferences, each comprising 10 clubs. A total of 180 matches will be played, culminating in round-trip play-offs between the top two teams from each conference. A unique point system will be implemented, where a drawn match will be decided by a penalty shootout, with the winning team receiving 2 points and the losing team 1 point, while a standard match win awards 3 points and a loss yields none.

As of December 13, 2025, the league standings remain empty, awaiting the commencement of play. The league has released regional breakdowns of participating clubs, highlighting their locations across Japan, including concentrated areas in the Kanto and Kansai regions.

While specific match schedules and stadium details are still forthcoming, the J.League has indicated plans to announce these details in November 2025. The league is also tracking attendance figures, with a dedicated ranking of the 10 largest crowds expected to be published throughout the competition.

The Japan Centenary Football League 2026 represents a bold step towards modernizing Japanese football, ensuring a smooth transition to a new seasonal structure and maintaining the competitive integrity of the league.
