“I will never forget the shock I felt when I was in sixth grade at junior school when I saw footage of the aftermath of the atomic bomb that the United States dropped on Hiroshima,” he said.
At the same time, answering a question about nuclear deterrence, Ishiba noted that “we need to think and hold discussions on how to combine deterrence measures and the renunciation of nuclear weapons.”
In August 1945, the US military dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On the anniversary of the events – August 6 and 9 – “Peace Ceremonies” are held every year in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, at which Japanese politicians usually do not mention the fact that these bombings were carried out by the Americans.
