Jarle Bernhoft about his wife and children: – Does not get applause at home

Earl Bernhoft

Jarle Bernhoft found it difficult to combine touring life with family life, and it became instructive for the artist when he consulted a psychologist.

Jarle Bernhoft (47) has lived from music for over 20 years, and the last 15 years as a solo artist. The man from Nittedal has recently also taken the step into the TV scene.

In 2022, he was seen as one of the participants in the popular “Hver gang vi møtes” on TV 2, and last year he was presented as a new mentor in “The Voice” on the same channel. Now he is starting his second season of the talent competition.

Married to Lisa Bernhoft-Sjødin

The artist says honestly that combining a life on tour with a life at home with a wife and two children has not been a cakewalk.

He married Lisa Bernhoft-Sjødin in 2010, and the couple have sons Samuel (13) and Benjamin (6) together.

Jarle tells “Good morning Norway” that it was a challenge for a long time to come home after being away for a long time to hold concerts.

– Being on tour is really an exercise in total self-absorption. Because I’m out, I don’t make the bed myself, I don’t cook the food myself, I get applause. My life is really characterized by receiving applause, he admits.

– And then I come home, and I don’t get applause at home, heh-heh, so it’s a completely different thing. And especially me who is an ambitious father, then coming home and then there are many routines that are already underway, and then I try to get into them and try to be present and things like that, it has been difficult . But now it’s much easier. I don’t travel as much as I used to either. 10 years ago it was completely “insane”, explains the 47-year-old.

The “Familiekoden kendis” podcast

In connection with TV 2’s new program “Familiekoden”, presenter Katrine Moholt (50) has also started the podcast “Familiekoden kjendis” together with her expert Reidar Hjermann (54), who is a psychologist and specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry.

In one of the podcast episodes, the duo talk to Jarle Bernhoft to find out what kind of dad he is and what kind of parenting style he and his wife have. Here, Jarle says that he is not at his best as a father when he comes home to the family’s routines after being on tour.

He describes it as a long exercise in having a guilty conscience 50 percent of the time and feeling inadequate the rest of the time.

– It was really painful… It was the first time that I broke down and had to go to a psychologist. It was incredibly educational, I can only recommend it. See a psychologist, he urges in the podcast.

Jarle’s psychologist perceived him as stressed and that he did not breathe properly when he spoke. Thus he had to learn to breathe properly.

He lies down and breathes for 10 minutes, thinking of nothing but his breathing. It has worked for him both at home and on tour. The artist feels that he has cleared up a number of knots, and now he feels “insanely much better”.
