Jason Gould Releases New Album, ‘Where We Fall,’ Reflecting a Lifetime Immersed in Music
A new generation of musical artistry has arrived with the release of Jason Gould’s second album, Where We Fall. The son of entertainment icons Barbra Streisand and actor Elliot Gould, Gould is forging his own path, blending personal reflection with a deep appreciation for musical history.
Gould’s journey to music was paved by an early life steeped in the arts. Having grown up in the public eye, he initially pursued a career as an actor, appearing in films such as Say Anything, The Big Picture, and The Prince of Tides. However, his passion ultimately led him back to his first love: music.
His debut album arrived in 2017, a collaboration with legendary producer Quincy Jones. He further cemented his musical lineage with a duet alongside his mother on “How Deep Is The Ocean,” featured on Streisand’s Partners album. Where We Fall builds on this foundation, offering a collection of both original compositions and reimagined classics.
The album’s tracklist includes covers of beloved songs like “Wild Is the Wind,” “Jealous Guy,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” and “What You Won’t Do for Love.” According to Gould, the album is deeply personal. “My mother was recording music when I was still in her belly,” he shared. “The vibration of music has always been part of me. This album is about embracing all sides of myself; the standards I grew up with, and the music I feel compelled to create today.”
Beyond his professional life, Gould offers a glimpse into his personality. He describes himself as “kinda shy, but I do have a dark sense of humour.” His tastes lean towards the documentary form, contrasting with a disinterest in sitcoms, and he reveals a playful preference for ice cream over cheese.
When asked to define his musical style, Gould offered a simple yet profound description: “Hmmm – I guess you could say it’s music from the heart and for the heart.” This sentiment is echoed in his diverse musical inspirations, which include John Williams, Nina Simone, Paul Simon, and George Michael.
Gould’s earliest musical memories are vivid. He recalls attending a live performance by Donna Summer in the late 1970s at The Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, a formative experience that ignited his passion for live music. His first record purchase was Dionne Warwick’s “I Say A Little Prayer,” a song he played “over and over on my plastic record player.”
Currently, Gould is captivated by Bon Iver’s latest release, “There’s a Rhythm,” praising its beauty. He also holds a deep admiration for the lyrical prowess of Joni Mitchell, and recently shared the stage with Patti Austen for a performance of “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?” at a celebration honoring songwriter Alan Bergman.
If faced with the impossible choice of listening to only one song for the rest of his life, Gould thoughtfully selected Duke Ellington’s “The Queen’s Suite.”
