Jason Momoa to Lead ‘Helldivers’ Film Adaptation for Sony Pictures
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are set to bring the popular cooperative video game Helldivers to the big screen, with Jason Momoa confirmed to star in the adaptation. The project, aiming for a November 10, 2027 theatrical release, promises a satirical take on space warfare.
The announcement marks a significant step for the Helldivers franchise, which has seen a surge in popularity with the release of Helldivers 2 in 2024. According to a company release, the game has already sold over 12 million copies across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox in just four months, fueling the demand for a cinematic adaptation.
Helldivers centers on the perilous missions of an elite unit defending “Super Earth” from relentless waves of insectoid aliens and robotic enemies. The game’s tone, inspired by the 1997 sci-fi satire Starship Troopers, deliberately balances propagandistic heroism with a critical examination of war fanaticism. “A material that, in the right hands, can transform into an explosive but also surprisingly intelligent show,” one analyst noted.
Justin Lin, known for his work revitalizing the Fast & Furious franchise with films like Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious 6, will direct and produce the film through his Perfect Storm Entertainment. He will be joined by Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash from PlayStation Productions. The screenplay is penned by Gary Dauberman, previously the author of It and It: Chapter Two, ensuring a focus on pacing and dramatic impact.
Momoa’s casting is viewed as a strategic move, capitalizing on his established action hero persona and growing success in video game adaptations. His recent role in A Minecraft Movie, which grossed approximately $960 million globally, has solidified his appeal to the gaming community. He is also slated to appear in the upcoming Street Fighter film in October 2026 and stars alongside Dave Bautista in the streaming hit The Wrecking Crew.
“Dave Bautista is like an older brother, I don’t have to say shit with him,” Momoa reportedly stated, highlighting his comfortable working relationships within the action genre.
The Helldivers film arrives as video game adaptations increasingly prove to be lucrative investments, following the success of projects like The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With Dune: Part Three, Supergirl, Minecraft 2, and Street Fighter already on his schedule, 2026-2027 promises to be a busy period for Momoa, solidifying his position as a leading figure in blockbuster cinema.
