Duke secured a decisive victory over Kansas, 78-66, Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in the annual Champions Classic. The fifth-ranked Blue Devils demonstrated resilience against a steadfast, but undermanned Jayhawks squad, improving to 5-0 on the season.
Blue Devils’ Balanced Attack Leads to Victory
Cameron Boozer spearheaded Duke’s offensive effort with 18 points and 10 rebounds, showcasing his dominance in the paint. He was ably supported by Isaiah Evans, who contributed 16 points, and Patrick Ngongba, who shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the field for 13 points. Crucially, twin brother Cayden Boozer delivered key baskets in the second half, providing a vital spark when Kansas threatened to close the gap.
Peterson’s Absence Looms Large for Kansas
the Jayhawks (3-2) struggled to find their rhythm without their star freshman, Darryn Peterson. The highly touted recruit, projected by some as a potential top pick in next year’s NBA draft, continues to be sidelined with a lingering hamstring injury, having now missed three consecutive games. His absence clearly impacted Kansas’s offensive capabilities and overall team dynamic.
Foul Trouble and Depth Disparity hamper Jayhawks
Despite a strong start that saw Kansas challenge Duke with fast-break points, the Jayhawks quickly found themselves in foul trouble. All five Kansas starters committed at least one foul in the first half, with three accumulating two apiece. This, combined with a noticeable disparity in team depth, allowed duke to capitalize and close the first half on a 17-5 run, establishing an eight-point lead.
Kansas attempted a late rally, narrowing the deficit to 67-64 on a 3-pointer from Melvin Council Jr. with 4:59 remaining. However, the accumulated fatigue from the early foul calls proved detrimental. Both Flora Bidunga and Bryson Tiller were hampered by foul trouble, with Tiller ultimately fouling out with 3:04 left in the game.
Duke Pulls Away in Final Minutes
A clutch 3-pointer from Evans, followed by four points from cameron boozer during an 8-0 run, sealed the victory for Duke. Tre white led Kansas with a valiant 23 points and nine rebounds, but his efforts were ultimately insufficient to overcome Duke’s balanced attack and the challenges posed by foul trouble.
Looking Ahead
Kansas will next face Notre Dame on Monday night in Las Vegas as part of the Players Era tournament. Duke, simultaneously occurring, will return home to host Niagara on Friday night.
