Jeju Island has been selected as the host of the 19th National Marine Sports Festival in 2027, solidifying its position as a burgeoning hub for marine leisure and sports in South Korea. The announcement marks a significant step forward for the island province, following its selection to host the National Sports Festival in 2026.
A National Celebration of Marine Sports
The National Marine Sports Festival, established in 2006 by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, is Korea’s largest annual marine sports competition. Its primary goal is to cultivate public interest in marine sports and broaden participation. To date, the festival has attracted over 3.14 million participants, including both athletes and spectators.
The selection process for the 2027 host city was competitive, involving a contest from September to October and an on-site inspection earlier this month. The ‘National Marine Sports Festival Committee’ formally approved Jeju Island’s bid on November 19th.
Economic and Tourism Benefits for Jeju
Officials anticipate the festival will significantly boost local marine tourism and provide opportunities for the public to experience a wide range of high-quality water sports. Jeju Island’s natural beauty and well-developed marine leisure infrastructure were key factors in its successful bid.
“Jeju, with its beautiful sea and natural scenery, is the best place to hold a marine sports festival,” stated a senior official from the Jeju Island Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Bureau. “With this festival as an opportunity, we will prepare step by step so that Jeju can leap forward as a global marine leisure hub.”
Festival Details and Expected Participation
The 19th National Marine Sports Festival is scheduled to take place between July and September 2027, with an estimated 100,000 attendees, including 6,000 athletes. The event will feature four official competitions – sailing, canoeing, fin swimming, and triathlon – alongside a variety of additional activities.
These supplementary events will include dragon boating, rubber boating, ocean swimming, and opportunities for hobbyists and the general public to participate in various marine sports. Jeju Island is collaborating closely with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to develop comprehensive programs aimed at expanding the base of marine sports enthusiasts.
Regional Context and Future Outlook
This year’s 17th National Marine Sports Festival was held in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do in August. The 18th festival is slated for Geoje-si, Gyeongnam, in the coming year. Jeju Island’s successful bid underscores the growing importance of marine sports in South Korea and the island’s commitment to becoming a leading destination for water-based recreation and competition.
The 2027 festival is expected to be a pivotal moment for Jeju, accelerating its transformation into a globally recognized marine leisure hub.
