jeonju 2036 Olympic Bid Shifts Events to Seoul, Raising Questions of Regional Focus
A potential shift in the planned venue locations for the 2036 Summer Olympics, should Jeonbuk Province’s bid for Jeonju succeed, is sparking debate over the balance between regional progress and leveraging existing infrastructure. On February 28, Seoul mayor Oh Se-hoon presented his city’s case for involvement in the bid to the Korea Sports Council, followed by a meeting with Jeonbuk Governor Kim Kwan-young.
According to details released on February 13th by Jeonbuk Province, a preliminary agreement has been reached with Seoul city and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation to utilize nine existing sports facilities in Seoul for eight different Olympic sports. This includes high-profile events such as track and field, handball, tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, and cycle track, all slated for venues within the Jamsil Sports Complex, Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, and Jangchung Gymnasium.preliminary matches for both basketball and soccer are also currently scheduled to take place in the South Korean capital.
The move of track and field events – originally planned for Daegu – to Seoul’s Jamsil Sports Complex has prompted a corresponding relocation of the shooting competition to Daegu. other events are also being distributed across the country, with soccer preliminaries set for Gwangju World Cup Stadium and the baseball finals and softball preliminaries planned for Gwangju Kia Champions Field and Gwangju Mudeung Baseball Stadium.
Jeonbuk Province is focusing on developing its own unique offerings. The swimming event, previously designated for Gwangju, will now be held in a new international swimming pool under construction in jeonju. The triathlon will take place at Byeonsan Beach in Buan, and the archery final is planned for the picturesque Jeonju Hanok Village. Organizers also intend to incorporate the distinct characteristics of nearby regions like Muju, Imsil, Jangsu, and Gochang into the olympic experience.
In total, 51 stadiums are expected to be used for the Jeonju Summer Olympics, with 32 located within Jeonbuk Province and 19 spread across other regions.
A spokesperson for Jeonbuk Province explained that the adjustments are a strategic response to limitations in stadium size or spectator capacity within the province itself, adhering to a principle of dispersing events where necessary. However, the decision to hold the prestigious track and field events in Seoul has raised concerns that the initial emphasis on regional development may be waning.
“This Olympic stadium layout plan reflects the opinions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and others, and is a plan to meet international standards while maximizing the success of the games,” the spokesperson added.
