Jeollanam-do Sets Ambitious Bid for 2028 G20 Summit, Declares 2026 “Year of Science & Technology”

Jeollanam-do Province is aiming for the international spotlight, with Governor Kim Young-rok announcing a bold initiative to host the 2028 G20 Summit and simultaneously designating 2026 as the “First Year of Jeollanam-do’s Science and Technology Promotion.” The move signals a strategic push to elevate the region’s profile as a hub for innovation and sustainable development.

Governor Kim unveiled the ambitious plan during a policy meeting held on Thursday at the Provincial Office, emphasizing the importance of aspirational goals. “If you don’t dream, nothing can be realized,” he stated, urging provincial officials to adopt a proactive and challenging approach to development.

The province’s confidence stems from South Korea’s confirmed chairmanship of the 2028 G20 Summit and recent indications from the President suggesting consideration of a regional city as a host. Governor Kim believes Jeollanam-do is uniquely positioned to succeed, citing its emerging strengths in “AI (digital) energy” and “Climate Change” initiatives. “We have the potential to host international events,” he affirmed.

Addressing potential logistical hurdles, Governor Kim pointed to the successful Gyeongju APEC Summit as a model for overcoming infrastructure challenges. He immediately instructed the formation of an expert advisory committee to spearhead the bidding process and develop comprehensive solutions.

The province’s commitment to scientific advancement is underscored by the designation of 2026 as a pivotal year for technology. This initiative builds on recent successes, including Naju’s selection as the site for a new artificial solar research facility and the successful fourth launch of the Nuri rocket from Goheung, which is bolstering the region’s burgeoning private space launch industry.

Beyond space exploration, Governor Kim highlighted the potential of agricultural solar power to revitalize rural economies. He explained that integrating solar energy with farming could increase profits tenfold, with a projected exponential return if the project expands to 2GW. This vision aims to attract young people back to rural areas, ensuring the continuation of vital agricultural practices.

In addition to the G20 bid and science & technology push, Governor Kim outlined several key priorities for the province, including bolstering support for workers and small businesses in Gwangyang City, designated as an industrial crisis preemptive response area. He also emphasized the development of the Yeosu-Goheung Baekni Island Road as a premier tourist destination, connecting key coastal cities like Wando, Jindo, Mokpo, and Yeonggwang. Finally, he called for increased support for the Korea Sports Talent Development Institute’s multi-purpose gymnasium, slated to open in Jangheung in December.
