Jeonnam Province holds ’13th Fisheries Day’ commemoration event

The National Fisheries Festival was held in Wando. Jeollanam-do announced that the 13th Fisheries Day commemoration event, a national fisheries people’s festival, was held at the Cheonghaejin Sports Center in Wando on the 17th.

Since 2012, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has designated April 1st as ‘Fisheries Day’ every year and held a commemorative ceremony to promote the importance of the fisheries industry and fishing villages and to inspire pride and self-esteem among fishermen.

This year, the event was delayed considering the 22nd National Assembly election schedule. This event, held under the theme of ‘Open fishing villages, young steps, new fisheries powerhouse’, included Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyeong, Wando-gun Mayor Shin Woo-cheol, Korea Fisheries Industry Federation Chairman Noh Dong-jin (Chairman of the Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives), and Park Sang-wook, Chairman of the Korea Federation of Fisheries Businessmen. 1,500 fishermen from all over the country attended and encouraged the hard work and achievements of fishermen and the fishing industry.

At the commemorative ceremony, Lee Seong-bae, head of the Jangheung County Fisheries Cooperative, who was recognized for his contribution to adding value to marine products and increasing fishermen’s income, including the success of cultivating seaweed, received the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, and Park Yeon-hwan, who has been working in the fisheries industry for over 30 years and devoted himself to nurturing successors and improving difficulties in the fishing field. 14 people who contributed to the development of the fisheries industry and fishing villages, such as the former president of the Jeonnam Association of Korean Fisheries Managers receiving a presidential commendation, and Lee Young-gil, CEO of Mihanggil Fisheries Co., Ltd., who contributed to the development of the eel farming industry, including HACCP and eco-friendly antibiotic-free certification, received the Prime Minister’s Award. 100 people received a government award.

In his commemorative speech, Minister Kang Do-hyeong said, “The government will do its best to increase the value of the fisheries industry and create a fishing village where people want to live,” and added, “We will transform the fishery industry into a future growth industry through deregulation and technological innovation, and carry out projects such as fisheries industry innovation and fishing village revitalization promotion projects.” “We will improve settlement conditions and jobs through this,” he said.

At the policy and publicity booth set up outside the memorial hall, Jeollanam-do Sarangae Supporters, the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, and the Ocean Healing Promotion Center were operated. In particular, the live abalone sales event from Wando, which was held through a seafood tasting event and live commerce, attracted the attention of many attendees.

Governor Kim Young-rok said, “We can only leap forward as a future fishing powerhouse if we have a foundation that can flexibly respond to new changes and challenges.” He added, “We will do our best to establish a foundation for profitable fishing and an eco-friendly and sustainable fishing industry by improving the quality and added value of marine products.” He said.

The production of marine products in the Jeonnam region is 1.91 million tons, accounting for 58% of the national total, the marine product production amount is KRW 3.1127 trillion, accounting for 38% of the national total, and the sea level fisheries are 187,000 ha, accounting for 65% of the national total.

‘Fisheries Day’ started as ‘Fisherman’s Day’ in 1969, was integrated into ‘Rural Farmers’ Day’ in 1973, and was revived as ‘Fisherman’s Day’ in 2011. Currently, in accordance with the ‘Framework Act on Fisheries and Fishing Village Development’ enacted in June 2015, the name has been changed to ‘Fisheries Day’ and a commemorative ceremony is held at the government level every year.
