Jesse Eisenberg Reveals TV Show Details as ‘The Debut’ Closes BFI London Film Festival

Jesse Eisenberg revealed details about his upcoming TV show as his film The Debut closed the BFI London Film Festival, with Julianne Moore praising the project and the film set for a December 11 release.

Jesse Eisenberg described his musical comedy The Debut as his favorite thing in the world during a discussion at the BFI London Film Festival. The film, which premiered at Telluride and closed the London event, stars Julianne Moore as a housewife drawn into a community theater production, with Eisenberg directing and writing the script. I love it more than I've ever loved anything I've made, Eisenberg said, adding that the project would not have existed without Moore’s involvement.

Julianne Moore’s Praise and the Film’s Premise

Moore called The Debut an incredible gift and praised Eisenberg’s worldview, sense of humor, and empathy. She described the script as one of the best I've ever read in my life, adding, I just feel really fortunate to have had this opportunity. The film follows Mona Friedman, a New Jersey housewife who auditions for a local theater production of the fictional musical Nosy Neighbors, with her life unraveling as she becomes consumed by the role. Eisenberg joked about working with his childhood idols, saying, I was my worst self while collaborating with Giamatti and Moore.

Eisenberg also teased his next project, a TV show written for A24 and former Disney exec Peter Rice. The series, set in the fall of 2002, explores the beginning of the culture wars and is described as not pretentious or overly political, or maybe it is pretentious. The film’s release date was confirmed for December 11, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman calling it a small-town-theater comedy rooted in big ideas that feels like 'Waiting for Guffman' made by the Coen brothers at their most rivetingly unhinged.
