A report to French authorities and an internal Catholic Church investigation have been launched into Gaël Giraud, a prominent jesuit priest and economist, following accusations of sexual violence and academic misconduct. The allegations, first published in the French weekly La Vie, have sent shockwaves through both religious and academic circles.
The Society of Jesus, the Jesuit congregation, confirmed it filed a report with the Paris prosecutor’s office on November 25. A parallel canonical investigation has also been initiated by the province of French-speaking Western Europe, the governing body overseeing Giraud, who joined the order in 2004 and was ordained a priest in 2013. According to a company release, the congregation responded to the allegations with “all the attention, listening and empathy that such a situation requires.”
Allegations of Abuse and coercion
The investigation by la Vie centers on accounts from several former collaborators and close friends of the 55-year-old economist. One woman, identified only as Sandra, who belongs to an order of “consecrated virgins,” described a relationship characterized by spiritual and psychological influence that allegedly escalated into sexual relations she characterizes as possibly “akin to rape.” Another woman,Chloé,accuses the priest of fostering “a vision of sexuality which was that of constraint.”
Beyond the allegations of sexual violence, a former doctoral student, David, alleges a “sectarian functioning” within the laboratory led by Giraud at the Jesuit University of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. He claims to have experienced daily pressures during his time there and further accuses Giraud of plagiarizing his research in a scientific article published in April 2022.
Giraud Denies Allegations, Cites Defamation
When questioned by La Vie, Giraud vehemently denied all accusations, dismissing them as “allegations” and “insinuations.” He alleges a “coordination” within a “press group” including La Vie and Le Monde aimed at “defamation.” Giraud also claims to have filed his own canonical report alleging moral harassment against the regional manager of the Society of Jesus.
Precautionary Measures and prior Concerns
The Jesuit congregation stated it had already implemented precautionary measures against Giraud as early as January 2024. These measures include a ban on public appearances and mandatory psychological follow-up. The congregation previously denied him access to his final vows due to what they described as “inappropriate behavior.”
Giraud gained public recognition for his involvement in the “popular primary,” a citizen movement advocating for a unified left-wing candidate in the 2022 French presidential election. The unfolding allegations raise serious questions about the conduct of a figure who once held considerable influence within French political discourse.
Why did this happen? The allegations stem from accusations of abuse of power and manipulation within relationships, alongside claims of academic dishonesty. Sandra and Chloé allege Giraud exploited spiritual influence for sexual coercion, while David accuses him of plagiarism and creating a hostile work surroundings.
