Jets Cornerback Kris Boyd Critically Injured in Manhattan Shooting
A 29-year-old man identified as New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was critically injured in a shooting in midtown Manhattan early Sunday, according to a statement from Mayor Eric Adams’ office. The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of gun violence in the city, even as officials report historic lows in shooting incidents.
The shooting occurred shortly after 2 a.m. outside a business located on West 38th Street near 7th Avenue, the New York Police Department reported. Boyd sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition. As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active.
“Although we’ve gotten shootings to historic lows in our city, we must continue to work to end gun violence,” Adams said in a message posted on social media. “Too many young lives have been tragically altered and cut short by this epidemic.”
The Jets organization acknowledged the situation, stating, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.” Boyd’s agent has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
Boyd’s 2025 season with the Jets was already sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained during training camp on August 2nd. The injury required surgery and resulted in his placement on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18th. He joined the Jets as a free agent in March, anticipated to be a vital contributor to a revamped special teams unit under new coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo.
Prior to joining the Jets, Boyd established himself as a special teams standout over six NFL seasons, most recently with the Houston Texans. He previously played four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings after being drafted in the seventh round in 2019, and also had stints with the Arizona Cardinals and Houston’s practice squad.
Boyd’s on-field intensity was notably displayed during the Texans’ divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in January. Following a forced fumble on a kickoff, he celebrated by removing his helmet and nearly colliding with his special teams coach.
News of Boyd’s injury prompted an outpouring of support from teammates. Linebacker Jermaine Johnson posted on social media, “Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety.” Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips added, “Lord, place your mighty hand on him as he fights lord God. Guide every doctor, nurse, and surgeon who touches him lord. Give his family strength! Kris is a fighter and we’re all here for him.”
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
