Senator Jim Justice Settles Tax Debt with US Government for Over $5 Million

A legal dispute over unpaid taxes spanning more than 15 years has concluded with West Virginia Senator Jim Justice agreeing to pay over $5 million to the United States government. The settlement, reached Monday, resolves a lawsuit filed by the Justice Department alleging years of non-payment despite repeated notices.

Did you know?-the Justice Department initially notified Senator Justice and his wife about the tax debt in 2009. the case lingered for over a decade before reaching a settlement this week.

Justice Department Pursued Unpaid Taxes

The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of West Virginia, detailed that Senator Justice and his wife were initially notified of the 2009 debt by the Treasury Department. According to the complaint, the couple “have neglected or refused to make full payment of those assessments to the United States.” The Justice Department sought full repayment of the owed amount, plus any additional relief the court deemed appropriate.

A subsequent filing on Monday indicated a settlement had been reached, with the couple agreeing to satisfy the full outstanding debt. Final approval of the agreement still requires a judge’s signature.

Mounting Financial Pressures

This settlement comes amid a series of financial challenges for the Justice family. Last month, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) filed liens totaling over $8 million against Senator Justice and his wife for unpaid taxes also dating back to 2009. Moreover,a judge last year ordered the sale of six companies owned by the Justice family to resolve separate outstanding debts.

The family’s ownership of The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, was also recently threatened, narrowly avoiding foreclosure after a debt settlement was reached.

Pro tip:-Tax liens are public record. they can substantially impact credit scores and make it difficult to obtain loans or other financial services.

senator Addresses Complex Finances

Speaking to local media in October, Senator Justice characterized his companies as “complicated and complex,” attributing their management to his children while suggesting that collection efforts were “politically motivated,” as reported by The Associated Press.

From Governor to Senator Amid Scrutiny

Senator Justice assumed office in January, succeeding former Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat.Prior to his election to the Senate, he served as governor of West Virginia from 2017 to 2025. Before entering politics,Justice was widely known as the heir to the bluestone coal company,a important player in West Virginia’s coal industry.

His victory in last year’s senatorial election was decisive, defeating his Democratic opponent by a margin exceeding 40 percentage points – a result mirroring the strong support for President Donald Trump in the state.

Senator Justice’s congressional office did not respond to a request for comment Monday evening. Bloomberg law initially reported on the lawsuit.

Raquel Coronell Uribe and Zoë Richards contributed to this report.
