HOUSTON — Jim Schlossnagle, the head baseball coach for the University of Texas, achieved a milestone on Saturday night, securing his 1,000th career victory as the third-ranked Longhorns defeated Baylor 5-2 at Daikin Park. The win not only extended Texas’s undefeated start to the season but also marked a significant achievement for Schlossnagle, who became the seventh active Division I baseball coach to reach this landmark. This historic win comes after a 25-year coaching career that has included tenures at UNLV, TCU, Texas A&M, and now Texas.

The Longhorns’ victory over the Baylor Bears was fueled by a strong offensive start, jumping to a 5-0 lead within the first three innings. Freshman outfielder Anthony Pack Jr. Played a key role in this early surge, driving in three of the team’s first four runs with a pair of run-scoring singles. Casey Borba further extended the lead with a well-executed safety squeeze in the third inning. The team’s overall record now stands at 10-0, placing them among the final four remaining unbeaten teams in the nation alongside No. 4 Mississippi State, Latest Mexico, and USC.

A Career Built on Success

Schlossnagle’s journey to 1,000 wins spans 25 years and four universities. His coaching record now stands at 1,000-469, boasting a .681 winning percentage. He previously led UNLV (2002-2003), TCU (2004-2021), and Texas A&M (2022-2024) before arriving at Texas in 2025. He is now the 70th skipper in NCAA history, regardless of division, to reach this milestone. Schlossnagle attributed his success to a combination of factors, emphasizing the importance of a supportive family and the commitment to winning from the institutions he’s served.

“You have to have an awesome family that’s supportive of you and then you have to be able to work at schools who are committed to winning,” Schlossnagle said, according to the University of Texas Athletics website. “I’ve been at places that were just doing okay, but then they rewarded success. That’s what happened at UNLV and later at TCU. As we won, we earned more support from the school. Then you end up at places like Texas A&M and Texas, where support is through the roof and you just have to do the work. So, I’ve been really lucky to be at great places and have awesome players, assistant coaches and tremendous support.”

Pitching Dominance Seals the Victory

While the offense set the tone early, the Longhorns’ pitching staff maintained control throughout the game, limiting Baylor to just two runs on four hits. Right-handed pitcher Max Grubbs (2-0) was credited with the win, delivering 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Luke Harrison. A combined effort from Michael Winter, Haiden Leffew, Ethan Walker, and Thomas Burns (who secured his second save) shut down the Bears’ offense for the remaining 5 2/3 innings.

Looking Ahead: Texas Faces Ohio State

The Longhorns will continue their participation in the BRUCE BOLT College Classic on Sunday with a matchup against Ohio State at 2 p.m. CT. This game represents another opportunity for the team to build on their perfect record and continue their strong start to the season. Fans can discover more information about the Texas Longhorns baseball program, including schedules and results, on the official athletics website. The team’s success under Schlossnagle, culminating in his 1,000th win, signals a promising future for Longhorns baseball.

The achievement is particularly notable given the competitive landscape of college baseball. As reported by The Daily Texan, the win also extends Texas’s undefeated streak to double digits, solidifying their position as a top contender this season. The team’s ability to perform consistently, both offensively and defensively, will be crucial as they navigate a challenging schedule and aim for postseason success.
