Czech Republic Breaks Ground on Innovative Noise-Reducing Tunnel for I/16 Road Upgrade
A groundbreaking project to overhaul a key transportation artery in the Czech Republic is underway, featuring the nation’s first tunnel designed with anti-noise cladding. The 1,285-meter-long crossing of the I/16 road in Jizerní Vtelno, near Mladá Boleslav, is entering its main construction phase, promising to alleviate congestion, improve safety, and minimize noise pollution for local residents.
The ambitious project, slated for completion by May 2027, addresses long-standing issues with the existing I/16 route, which is characterized by sharp switchbacks and bottlenecks. According to a release, the upgrade will include a nearly kilometer-long uphill lane, significantly improving traffic flow between Mladá Boleslav and Mělník.
Construction began in May, with crews already excavating a 200-meter-long cut, reaching depths of up to six meters. A key component of the project is a 270-meter-long backfilled tunnel, which will temporarily limit access to Stránov Castle. To maintain access during construction, a temporary bridge has been installed, replacing the existing route through the historic wall. Following tunnel completion, the road will be restored to its original configuration.
“Currently, the maximum deployment is concentrated at the beginning of the new route in the direction from Mělník,” a senior official stated. “Among the heavy equipment here, we also have a drilling rig as tall as a three-story house.” This equipment is being used to drill 132 piles to a depth of up to 16 meters, forming the foundation for a robust pile wall on either side of the excavation.
The project’s most innovative feature is the implementation of anti-noise lining within the tunnel walls. This technology, a first for the Czech Republic, is designed to dampen noise waves, reducing the impact of traffic on the surrounding environment. The ŘSD (Roads and Motorways Directorate) will closely monitor the effectiveness of this lining, potentially paving the way for its adoption in future infrastructure projects.
The I/16 bypass is expected to divert significant transit traffic from the village of Vtelno, which currently sees around 6,000 vehicles daily, with approximately one-third being freight and truck traffic. This reduction in traffic volume will not only improve the quality of life for residents but also enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project is being undertaken by Doprastav at a cost of 662 million Czech crowns (approximately $28.5 million USD without VAT). Despite the clayey soil conditions at the construction site, officials remain confident in meeting the May 2027 completion deadline.
This upgrade to the I/16 represents a significant investment in the Czech Republic’s transportation infrastructure, promising a safer, more efficient, and quieter future for the region.
