Whiley shared that her father’s capacity for love was shaped by a challenging early life. As a boy, Martin Whiley contracted tuberculosis and spent two years isolated in a London sanitarium. Having lost his parents at a young age, he was raised by a family friend he called his beloved Pap.
In her tribute, the broadcaster noted that meeting her mother provided Martin with the family stability he had lacked. Knowing how it felt not to be cared for, he devoted his life to caring for others, she wrote. His commitment to others extended to his advocacy within the learning disability community, particularly through his support for Whiley’s sister, Frances, who has cri du chat syndrome.
